Potholes are more than just frustrating. According to the transportation group TRIP, pothole damage can cost urban drivers over $500 each year.
The jarring of a wheel as it strikes suddenly into a sharp divot can cause a host of car troubles, including bent wheel rims, punctured tires, steering system misalignment, and more.
That’s why this new Ford technology is so exciting. New to the 2017 Ford Fusion Sport (that’s the Ford Fusion‘s 325-horsepower performance trim), pothole avoidance technology will scan the road using sensors. If a pothole is detected, the shock absorbers automatically stiffen, holding up the wheel in danger of striking the hole.
Instead of falling into the hole can causing damage, the shock absorber system should hold it up, so it glides right over the top.
