Ford GE Ventilator

Ford Working with GE Healthcare to Produce Ventilators

In collaboration with GE Healthcare, Ford Motor Company is starting production of ventilators for COVID-19 patients across the country, with the goal of producing 50,000 units in 100 days and up to 30,000 a month after that if needed. The ventilator was approved by the FDA and designed by Airon Corp. with a simplified, but effective design.

The new GE/Airon Model A-E ventilator operates on air pressure and doesn’t require electricity to be used, allowing it to be used in a variety of environments and locations. It has been designed to meet the needs of most COVID-19 patients suffering respiratory issues, and is able to be produced in large numbers quickly.

“The Ford and GE Healthcare teams, working creatively and tirelessly, have found a way to produce this vitally needed ventilator quickly and in meaningful numbers,” said Ford president and CEO Jim Hackett. “By producing this ventilator in Michigan, in strong partnership with the UAW, we can help health care workers save lives, and that’s our No. 1 priority.”

By working around the clock, 500 paid volunteer UAW employees will produce the ventilators on three shifts at the Michigan factory. Airon currently produces three ventilators per day in Florida, but Ford plans to make 7,200 per week once it reaches full production speed.
